A Reflective Invitation
Have you ever marveled at the reflective moments at the Communion table or during the Eucharist? There is something truly special about this remembrance ceremony, ordained by Christ Himself. For a Christian, it is more than just a symbol or ritual; it is an invitation to reconnect with the ancient presence revealed in the Tabernacle of God, pointing to the divine fulfillment found in Christ.
The Table in the Tabernacle
The Table of Showbread, as beautifully described in Exodus 25:23–30, was situated in the Holy Place of the Tabernacle, just before the Holy of Holies that housed the Ark of the Covenant.
This table, ornate and exquisite, held elements intended for divine service and worship. Yet access to it was reserved for only the Aaronic priest. The twelve freshly baked loaves of bread, symbolizing the twelve tribes of Israel, were placed before the Lord continually.
The golden dishes and cups for the libation or drink offering were elements used only by a select few. For everyone else, the table stood as a visible reminder of the barrier between God and humanity — one that demanded deep respect.
From Then to Now
As we begin to look at applications, we can ask why these elements are important for us today.
I often wonder what emotions stirred in the hearts of first-century Israelites as the priest entered the Holy Place on their behalf, partaking of the sacred bread once a week. What did they feel as the fragrant offerings of libation and frankincense rose toward heaven, filling the air with an aroma pleasing to the God of Israel?
They knew the crucial role the priests played in drawing them into worship and maintaining their connection with God. But how does this speak to us as modern believers — without a temple, a table, or an altar?
How does this ancient act of devotion and remembrance find purpose in my life as a New Testament follower of Christ, allowing me to worship Him personally?
It is not a difficult step to see Jesus in this marvelous table of worship — and what a thrilling leap it is!
Scripture
“Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.’”
John 6:35
The True Table in Christ
The New Testament — the new covenant sealed by the sacrifice of Christ — reveals that His body was broken for both you and me, and His blood poured out on our behalf.
At the Last Supper, as He shared the bread and cup with His disciples, Jesus instituted what we now know as Communion. He declared, this is my body… this is my blood. Take, eat, and drink — “all of you” (Matthew 26:26–28).
When Jesus gave His life, the veil of the temple was torn in two, granting us access to the very presence of God. We now approach Him not in our merit, but through the precious blood Christ offered on our behalf.
No longer are we merely onlookers — we are invited to the true Table, where we eat the bread of His presence and drink the cup of His covenant, sharing perfect fellowship with God through Jesus.
ALL believers are welcome here.
What an exclusive privilege it is to come and partake of the True Bread of Life, the One who came down from heaven.
You can partake. You can worship in devotion, love, and fellowship.
