Psalm 8:3-4
“When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which You have set in place,
what is mankind that You are mindful of them,
human beings that You care for them?”
While vacationing in the Eastern Caribbean, my husband and I had the chance to go on a sea turtle snorkeling adventure. I waded into the ocean, slipped my mask beneath the water’s surface, and in an instant, the world changed.
Above, the sea stretched endlessly — calm, vast, and shimmering in mesmerizing shades of blue. But below, a hidden world came alive. Coral swayed with the current, schools of fish darted around me, and a sea turtle glided by with effortless grace. A stingray passed silently beneath me, and what had seemed simple from above turned out to be full of breathtaking wonder below.
As I floated there, Psalm 8 came to mind.
David looked up at the night sky — at the vast heavens shining with stars — and was overwhelmed by the greatness of God’s creation. Yet what humbled him most wasn’t the size of the universe or the beauty of the stars, but that the God who made all of it would care so deeply for him.
I am humbled to know that the same God who filled the seas with life and magnificent wonder and commanded the heavens into existence made humanity as His crowning work — not because we are grand or powerful, but because He wanted relationship with us. He gave us the ability to fellowship with Him, love Him, and gave us a soul that we might know Him in a most intimate way.
As the Lord declares in Jeremiah 9:23–24,
“Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom,
let not the mighty man boast in his might,
let not the rich man boast in his riches,
but let him who boasts boast in this,
that he understands and knows Me,
that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth.”
True wonder isn’t just found in the depths of the ocean or the greatness of the heavens — it’s found in knowing the One who made them.
Creation invites us to worship — but it also invites us to marvel that the Creator of all wonders knows your name. Every sunrise, every star, every sea turtle gliding through crystal-clear blue waters testifies not just to the power of his handiwork, but to His affection — an affection reserved for His masterpieces.
As Ephesians 2:10 reminds us,

We are the Master Artist’s prize creations — made not merely to exist within His beautiful creation, but to reflect the beauty of the Creator. When we pause to look beneath the surface of the ocean, at the stars, and even Scripture, we find layers of wonder revealing the same truth: the God who made every marvelous thing is mindful of us. Now that is something to marvel about: Oh God, that you are mindful of me!
Prayer of Reflection:
Lord, among all the wonders of Your creation, You are mindful of me. Thank You for seeing me, knowing me, and calling me Your masterpiece. I pray that this Oh, What is Man?-Bible Devotional, will help me live each day more aware of Your presence and tender care. Amen.
