When I slipped beneath the surface of the Caribbean waters in a sea turtle snorkel adventure, the world changed in an instant. Above the ocean, the waters were blue and endless. But below, a hidden world of wonder and awe unfolded. It made me pause and think of the beauty of God’s creation and reminded me that in a world full of God’s beauty, God is astonishingly personal to me. Psalm 8 invites you into that same wonder. READ PSALM 8 as you prepare for this study.
The Wonder of God’s Creation
1. What recent moments in nature have made you stop and ponder, “Only God could have made this?”
2. How does taking time to observe creation lead you to worship the Creator?
3. Jot down a few ways that the beauty of the world reveals God’s imagination and power.
Creation is God’s invitation to slow down and look a little deeper at the beauty that is before us. Just like snorkeling revealed a world beneath the surface for me, creation reveals the heart of our Creator-detailed, intentional, purposeful, and beautiful.
David’s Response in Psalm 8
1. Why do you think David was overwhelmed and in awe by the idea that God notices humanity?
2. Are there times that you struggle in feeling insignificant? What does it personally mean to you that God is mindful of you today?
3. David realizes in Psalm 8:4, that even in the vastness of creation, God remembers him. How can the vastness of creation deepen your appreciation for God’s love?
David looked at the night sky and felt small and yet deeply seen. The same God that created the coral reefs and the sea turtles, and set the stars in place is attentive to you and to me. He thinks about us. He cares about us. He loves us deeply.
Knowing God Intimately: The True Treasure (Read Jeremiah 9:23-24) “Let the one who boasts boast in this: that they understand and know me.” (partial excerpt)
1. Reflecting on the Jeremiah passage, what does it mean in your daily life to “understand and know” God? Is this something that you seek on a daily basis? Why or why not?
2. Why is knowing God more valuable than wisdom, strength, or success?
3. Think about one way you can take time this week to deepen your intimacy with Him. Write down that step that you will take.
God’s greatest gift isn’t creation—beautiful and breathtaking as it is. His greatest gift is Himself. He formed us, His “very good” creation, not simply to admire the world around us, but to walk closely with Him… personally, intimately, and daily.
Closing Challenge: This week, take one deliberate moment to pause and recognize the beauty of the world that God has created-then let that moment turn into worship. Look up at the sky, see the moon and the stars. Watch the trees, see the color, marvel at the vastness of all creation. Then, let that bring you back to the Creator, who is mindful of you and desires more than anything to have deep, intimate fellowship and relationship with you.
