When God Was Silent… Yet Still Working

For four centuries, Israel heard no new prophecy from God. Yet although quiet, heaven had not gone still—God was arranging every detail for the coming of the Messiah. The silence was not inactivity; it was preparation. Zacharias’ moment in the temple reveals that God’s timing is never late, and His promises never drift out of His attention.

1. Reflect on the time between the close of the Old Testament and the opening of the New Testament in Luke. In what ways does the 400-year silence highlight God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises (Malachi 3:1)?

A heart that is ready to respond

God did not choose a king, a prophet, or a famous priest—He chose a humble, aging servant who walked in righteousness. Zacharias was in the place of obedience. In this Breaking the Silence Bible Study, consider that his heart was positioned to hear even when his mind struggled to believe.

When God Breaks The Silence Today

The God who spoke to Zacharias still speaks today—through His Word, by His Spirit, and in the hearts of all who are willing to listen. The same message that echoed across centuries, “Behold, He shall come,” continues to call us to attentive and responsive faith. Advent invites us to quiet our hearts, to listen with expectation, and to respond as Zacharias ultimately did—with trust that leads to obedience.

2. In what personal way has God “broken the silence” in your life before? What did He reveal or show you during that season?

3. As you reflect on Zacharias’ encounter with Gabriel, how is your own faith being challenged or strengthened? After considering how Hebrews 1:1–2 and John 10:27 complement this story, identify one specific way you can exercise your faith more fully this week.
