“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.”
The new year often ushers us into self-improvement mode. If only I could do better… be better. If I could reach this goal or finally attain that ‘thing’, then life would feel more complete. But if we’re not careful, that pursuit becomes a trap. When we fall short, when discipline fades or circumstances begin to interrupt our plans, discouragement quickly follows.
What began with hope ends in quiet defeat. We tell ourselves we’ve failed—again—and slowly, hope begins to feel out of reach. The striving becomes the focus, and the failure becomes paralyzing.
But Gods grace speaks into that cycle.
Grace does not ask us to strive our way into wholeness. Rather, grace calls us to remain.
Grace has spoken to your heart through Gods perfect revelation, the gift of His Son, Jesus. You have responded by hearing and surrendering your heart. Now what?
“Abide in me, and I in you.”
To remain—to abide—is not passive. It is a conscious choice that we make to stay near the Good Shepherd. It is drawing close enough to learn His voice, to trust His care, and to be shaped by what He desires for each of us rather than be driven by what we demand of ourselves. The choice is sometimes easy. The choice is sometimes difficult.
Abiding means we stay when it’s hard. When we feel confused. When prayers feel unanswered. When we are sad, uncertain, lonely—or even angry. And abiding also means we stay when it’s good. When joy comes easily. When blessings overflow. When the pasture feels green and the path ahead feels clear.
The Shepherd does not call us to wander until we figure things out. He calls us to stay—to remain with Him—because life, growth, and rest are found there. Each of us must decide. No one can ‘remain’ for us. It is a daily choice we make as we journey through life’s ups and life’s downs. Will I stay? Will I abide with my Shepherd who cares deeply and loves me beyond measure?
Will I remain?
“Choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: … but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Shepherd, teach my heart to stay.
