February ushers in a flurry of red and pink shades, with heart and flower motifs appearing everywhere as reminders that love surrounds us.
At Timber and Grace Encounters, we want to pause and reflect on a deeper, more encompassing love—the love of God. This grander love extends beyond cultural customs and serves as the foundation for all other forms of love. Let’s begin our “Season of Psalms of Love” with The LORD is My Shepherd -Loved Personally.
The Psalms often express God’s love and care, and this week we’ll look at one of the most recognized passages in all of Scripture.
Psalm 23:1: “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
This familiar verse is a powerful declaration of God’s deep, personal love for His people, beautifully pictured through the relationship between a shepherd and his flock. It reminds us that we are personally loved by a God who desires to meet our every need. To me, it is one of the most tender images in all of Scripture.
David likely wrote these words while reflecting on his own years as a shepherd. He understood the responsibility of guiding, protecting, and providing for helpless sheep. Phillip Keller, in A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23, shares that the shepherd’s work is never for his own convenience, but always for the fullness of life of the sheep—bringing them safety, nourishment, rest, direction, and health.
This is the heart behind the Shepherd who now cares for us. This imagery cannot be lost on us, who are now called the sheep of God’s pasture.
One of the most profound words in Psalm 23:1 is ‘LORD.’ It sets the tone for the entire Psalm by identifying who the Shepherd truly is.
Not just any shepherd, but Jehovah God, the great “I AM, is the One who leads and cares for us. The Great Shepherd is not distant or general—He is very personally –yours and mine.
The name “I AM” invites a powerful question:
What isn’t He?
What is it that He cannot be for us?
Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself through His character—not as titles to memorize, but as truth to rest in. He shows us that He is trustworthy and sufficient in every season of our lives, whatever the need.
This is why Psalm 34:9–11 fits so beautifully with Psalm 23:
Those who fear Him, seek Him, and trust Him – and lack no good thing.
You see, it is God who defines what is good.
Psalm 34 keeps Psalm 23 from becoming self-centered. With reverence, awe, and proper fear of the Lord, our understanding of “good” is transformed. Our perception shifts from what we believe is good to what God knows is best.
So Psalm 23:1 isn’t just about provision. It is about loving, complete, and personal provision that flows from the identity of our Shepherd.
“The LORD is my shepherd” means… The I AM is everything I will ever need.
Because He is I AM, He is:
Comforter when we ache
Provider when we lack
Shield when we fear
Shepherd when we wander
Rock when we are shaken
Father when we are needy
Husband to the brokenhearted
Light when we are confused
Way when we are lost
Truth when lies threaten
Hope when despair is all around
Strong Tower when danger comes
Because He is I AM,
because He loves as a Shepherd,
because He is our personal God,
because He defines what is truly good,
I lack nothing.
And that, my friend, is God’s love.
