“As for God, His way is perfect.”
Psalm 18:30
Psalm 18 is a song of David, written after the Lord delivered him from his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
It is a psalm of praise from a man who had known fear, danger, waiting, betrayal, and uncertainty.
As he often does, David gives voice to the God who had been his strength,
his rock, his fortress, his shield, and his deliverer.
I am frequently challenged by the life of David,
especially the years between being anointed by Samuel and being crowned king over Israel.
What must it have been like to know God had appointed him for a future position,
yet spend years running for his life?
What was it like to carry the promise of God while everything around him looked anything but promising?
And yet David could still say,
“As for God, His way is perfect.”
That sentence causes me to stop and think deeply.
Because there are times in my own life when I do not see things as perfect at all.
I do not always understand why certain things happen.
I do not understand why God allows suffering, evil, loss, delay, sickness, or sorrow.
I do not always understand the road He permits His people to walk.
But Psalm 18:30 does not say life feels perfect.
It says His way is perfect.
David must have learned this truth over time.
As a shepherd boy, as a giant slayer, as a servant in Saul’s house,
as a hunted man in the wilderness, and eventually as king,
David learned that God’s ways were higher, wiser, and better than his own.
And I believe this is a truth that has to be settled ahead of time.
Before the crisis begins.
Before the hurt comes.
Before illness becomes a battle.
Before the questions arise.
His way is perfect.
Psalm 18:30 continues by saying, “The word of the Lord is tried.”
His Word is pure, refined, proven, and trustworthy.
Like silver tested in the fire, it has been found flawless.
So when God’s Word says He is a shield, He is.
When His Word says He is near to the brokenhearted, He is.
When His Word says He will direct our paths as we trust Him, He will.
When His Word says His way is perfect, it is.
Because His Word is true, we can trust it.
Because His character is flawless, we can rest in Him.
Because His way is perfect, we can obey even when we do not understand.
There will be times when we cannot see His hand moving.
There will be seasons when we feel delayed, tried, confused, or deeply burdened.
David was not a perfect man, but he trusted the perfect God.
And that is where faith settles itself. In the perfect heart of God.
One of the strongest inscriptions I have ever heard is said to have been found on a WWII-era cellar in Cologne, Germany.
“I believe in the sun, even when it is not shining.
I believe in love, even when I do not feel it.
I believe in God, even when He is silent.”

That kind of faith does not come from pretending life is easy.
It comes from believing that God is still God when life is uncertain.
So do not wait until you are in the trench, the trial, or the battle to decide whether God’s ways are flawless.
Settle it today.
As for God, His way is perfect.
And even when you cannot see His hand, you can trust His heart.
